On another oh so short lay over (this time traveling from Milan to Munich), we stopped in Zurich. Knowing we only had a few hours to kill, we made sure our main stop was a decent meal!
After much research (and help from Pinterest), we knew we had to go to Zeughauskeller!
The building was constructed in 1487 and was originally a store house for ammunition. Hints of the buildings past can still be seen in the munitions kept near the front, the cannon above the front door, and the art around the walls! Around 1926 it was converted to the restaurant, and the interior structure remains much the same today as back then.
They are open 7 days a week from 11:30 am to 11pm (23:00) and are located at Bahnhofstrasse 28A, 8001 Zürich.
If you go, make sure to order the Mayor's Sword. It's 400 grams (14 ounces) of marinated beef steak, pounded thin and wrapped around a sword blade. It's served with curry-garlic and barbecue sauces, a salad, and rosti which are "Swiss style" hash brown potatoes.
Here it is without the sides. I was so excited to start eating, that I didn't take any more pictures!
Let me tell you, the steak did not disappoint! My dinner companions all had rave reviews about their meals as well!
Besides sword steak, one of the other main attractions is the flaming beer. Which is large enough to share with friends. Just make sure you don't stand too close, the heat coming off the glass is quite strong!
Bottom line, you can't go wrong wandering District 1 (Bahnhofstrasse). Check out St. Peters church, do some window shopping at Céline, Hermès, or Valentino, and take a stroll across the Rathausbrückee or Münsterbrücke bridges.
Just don't forget to stop for a bite at Zeughauskeller!
-Until the next adventure!
